how I can manage/prevent the breakouts?

I suffered with terrible acne when I was in my late teens/early twenties. I have always been plagued with spots since. I get bad breakouts of white heads during the time of my period and now this seems to be progressing more towards acne again. By the time they have nearly cleared up I will be getting my next hormonal breakout.
I am depressed, feel and look ugly and am really in despair as to how I can manage/prevent the breakouts. Please could you give me some advice.
My normal skincare routine involves cleanse, tone and polish twice a day. I have dry and dull looking skin.

Hi Dawn,
Thanks for sharing your experience of acne and how it makes you feel. I'm sorry to hear that you are feeling depressed. Emotional support is available and here are the contact details:

Your skin care routine sounds appropriate. I recommend a fragrance-free cleanser/ wash. A toner with salicylic acid can be helpful for areas with whiteheads +/- blackheads. 'Polishing' the skin may cause irritation and so I would caution against doing this so frequently.

Given that your acne is closely linked to your menstrual cycle then I suggest that you seek medical advice to discuss the options for treatment. Further information on acne associated with hormonal changes is available here:

With best wishes,
