Can prostate cancer be treated?

Prostate cancer is one of the common cancers in men. This is a quite dangerous disease, causing serious problems, but if detected and treated properly the disease can be completely cured.

Learn general about prostate cancer[/b

The prostate gland is only found in men, located under the bladder, in front of the large intestine. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra, which is vital for reproduction, as it produces sperm and transports sperm.
Prostate cancer, also known as prostate cancer, is a common disease in men, caused by abnormal or uncontrolled growth of prostate cells. Usually, the disease develops slowly in the early stages, if detected and treated early, patients can live for many years, even completely cured. However, if the disease progresses to a serious level, the rate of disease development is very rapid, even fatal.
Although the cause of prostate cancer is currently unknown, according to some studies, prostate cancer is affected by the diet and genes of the patient. People who eat a lot of fat are at a higher risk of getting sick.

2. Prostate cancer stage
The advanced stages of prostate cancer

  • Stage I: Cancer tissue is detected only in the prostate gland, looking like a normal prostate tissue.
Stage II: The tumor can be detected through rectal examination, biopsy or PSA blood test. At this stage, cancer cells do not show signs of metastasis to other organs, but have shown signs of faster development than stage I.
Stage III: Cancer cells have invaded into the tissues surrounding the prostate gland, and may also spread to seminal vesicles.
Stage IV: Cancer cells have spread to lymph nodes, rectum, bladder or even distant organs such as bones, liver, and lungs.

Thanks to the outstanding development of medicine, the diagnosis of prostate cancer is made by many different methods and is highly effective; which emerged as a method of testing PSA in the blood to help detect disease at an early stage. By this method, the infected person can be detected promptly, even the disease can be completely cured. A study of prostate cancer with white Americans shows that the prognosis depends on the stage of detection, the survival rate over 5 years when the disease is detected at an early stage is nearly 100%, meanwhile the rate of detection at the time of cancer has metastasized is 34%.

3. Prostate cancer treatment regimen
Based on the individual's medical condition, such as tumor metastasis, histology, PSA concentration in the blood, age and health of the patient, the doctor will diagnose and recommend treatments. different.

3.1 Monitoring the disease situation
In the case of a patient under the age of 60, who has prostate cancer in stage T1a, just follow closely and do not conduct treatment. Simple follow-up is usually used for low histopathology, localized prostate tumor and no metastases.

3.2 Radiotherapy
Radiation therapy is a method that uses radiation with a large energy source to help eliminate cancer cells. This method is effective immediately and can be indicated for use at any stage of the disease when needed.
For cases of T3 disease, the usual method is radiotherapy. However, if the patient has advanced age or is in poor health, radiotherapy may not be considered due to the fact that the disease develops in these people often very slowly.

3.3 Endocrine treatment
The goal of hormonal treatment is to minimize the male hormone, thereby inhibiting the development of the disease. Hormonal treatment has two basic methods: male hormonal destruction with testicular surgery and hormonal medicine (in case the patient contraindicated surgery or refusing surgery).
In case of advanced cancer, the tumor has spread, can be combined with endocrine therapy with radiation therapy, depending on the condition of each person. If the tumor has metastasized but no clinical manifestations are available, it is possible to wait until symptoms appear to start treatment, because the effect of the drug does not depend on this waiting period.

3.4 Surgical removal of the prostate gland
This is an effective treatment for early prostate cancer. With this method, surgery to remove the entire prostate gland, depending on the case, it is possible to remove the seminal vesicles and the lymph nodes on both sides of the pelvis to thoroughly eliminate cancer cells without metastasizing to other parts. The doctor will examine each person's medical condition and order open or laparoscopic surgery.
