Can women have hair transplants?
Hair transplants are a surgical procedure that involve taking hair, usually from the back of the head, and grafting to a bald area. As you can imagine it’s pretty painful, comes with risks and is very expensive £3k – £10K (depending on how much is transplanted and how many sessions you need). However, a good result can give someone their hair back and with celebrities visiting their surgeons faster than melting snowflakes the popularity of this procedure has snowballed.
Not everyone can have it. Firstly you have to have enough donor hair and secondly you need to know why your hair has fallen out. Your hair loss needs to be permanent and not a condition with an underlying cause.
It’s very well suited to many cases of androgenetic alopecia, (female/male pattern baldness) however many ladies I see with this condition experience a general thinning all over the scalp. It can look very different to male pattern baldness. It’s also an effective treatment for traction alopecia (permanent hair loss due to pulling the hair too tightly in ponytails or braids).
Lots of ladies ask me about transplantation but because there are so many reasons for female hair loss the treatment is usually unsuitable.
