Treating guttate psoriasis

I have psoriasis – guttate and currently I have a lot of small to medium spots on my legs – what is the best way to treat as its extremely annoying and I don’t want to use steroid cream. Thank you.

So sorry to hear about your psoriasis. The best way would be UVB phototherapy available through your dermatologist. You can also try Dovonex ointment twice a day or a coal tar preparation (e.g. Exorex lotion twice daily). Enstilar foam works even better but it contains a steroid and I noted that you are not keen on a steroid.

Thank you for your question - guttate psoriasis can be really tricky to manage. Some of my patients who have it find creams really tricky because there are so many small spots to treat!

I agree with the recommended treatments which do not contain steroids (dovonex, exorex lotion) which can be helpful. Steroid creams (such as dovobet, diprosalic ointment) can be used safely and effectively to keep guttate psoriasis under control, when I prescribe these to my patient I give guidance on how frequently and how often it should be used to reduce the risk of side effects such as skin thinning. If you are interested in trying these creams then your GP should be able to help

If creams are not helpful and your psoriasis is affecting your quality of life, there are further treatments available through a Dermatologist which include UV light therapy and tablets.
