Re: Fungal Skin/Ringworm

Hello there,

Thank you for your post. It sounds as though this skin complaint is really difficult for you to manage.

Am I right in thinking from your post that you have had a continuous fungal ringworm infection for 3 years? Or has it gone away and come back? Where exactly is the ringworm and what does it look like? Ringworm usually looks like a round, red or silvery patch of skin that may be scaly, inflamed and itchy. It commonly appears on the arms and legs.

Usually, in my experience, ringworm takes about 4 weeks to clear after using treatment. Are you currently using any treatment?

I am concerned that you have to alter the clothes you are wearing and you say it is getting larger and larger? Please can you advise which area of the body it covers now?

I appreciate that you feel disappointed with your treatment so far but I strongly believe you need to see the doctor again and try obtain a referral to a specialist who will be able to look at the problem and hopefully find a treatment that works and confirm the diagnosis.

In the meantime, I would advise you to try prevent the spread by following these steps from NHS choices:
*Avoid sharing personal items – such as combs, hairbrushes, towels, clothing and bed linen
*Avoid scratching the affected areas of your skin or scalp, because it could spread the infection to other parts of your body
*If you suspect that your pet is the source of the infection, take them to your vet for treatment. Patches of missing fur is a sign that an animal has ringworm. Always wash your hands after touching a pet with the infection.

NHS Choices also has some useful information regarding fungal infections. Take a look at their website: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Ringworm/P ... ction.aspx

Please do write back with more information about your symptoms and treatment to date, and I might be able to advise you further.

Best wishes,

Justine

Re: Fungal Skin/Ringworm

Hello,

Thank you for the information you have given me. I hope you found the websites and information I gave you useful.

What type of cream are you using? This website gives you the different types of antifungal creams available in the UK and how best to use them for fungal skin. http://cks.nice.org.uk/fungal-skin-infe ... inginfosub

Are you able to obtain a referral to a dermatologist? They might be able to diagnose the condition and then treat it specifically.

Other things you can do at home to avoid the fungus spreading and returning include:
◦To wash the affected skin daily and dry thoroughly afterwards, particularly in the skin folds.
◦To wash clothes and bed linen frequently to eradicate the fungus.
◦Not to share towels and to wash them frequently.
◦To wear loose-fitting clothes made of cotton or a material designed to keep moisture away from the skin.

Kind regards,

Justine
