Intermittent fasting - any experiences

Hi all,

I'm considering trying intermittent fasting the 16/8 schedule. I'm in my early 40s, in okay shape but could do with shifting probably around 10lbs. I already excercise 3-4 times a week mix of weights and HIIT cardio but have found post 40 a few pounds creeping on and harder to lose.

Weight loss is not only the reason for thinking of trying intermittent fasting as reading up it says you can generally feel better, better gut health, reduces chances of certain disease. However like any of these things you also read that it is not so good, can cause the body to enter starvation, diet misses out on key proteins and nutrients etc.

So asking for any 'real' experiences.....

Re: Intermittent fasting - any experiences

There are times I don't eat anything: I just ignore my hunger. But the next day I will end up eating a few squares of chocolate and a strawberry jam sandwich. I may even eat a bag of crisps. But I try to be cautious with what I eat. That means no takeaways or fatty pizzas.

I don't deliberately starve myself but I don't always fulfill my hunger pangs.

I totally get what you are facing. I was hesitant about intermittent fasting too, thinking I'd be starving all the time. But surprisingly, it's not the case always. Our bodies adapt, and hunger decreases over time. Give it a try and see how it goes for you!

Intermittent fasting can have benefits, but it's essential to listen to your body and consult with a healthcare professional.

Benign prostate enlargement and treatment.

Have you ever considered the link between benign prostate enlargement and acne? Could there be a correlation between the two conditions that has yet to be explored?

Benign prostate enlargement and treatment: Have researchers considered the potential link between acne and prostate health? Is there any evidence to suggest that individuals with acne may be at a higher risk for developing benign prostate enlargement later in life?

Re: Intermittent fasting - any experiences

Hi,

I can totally relate to what you're saying—hitting your 40s can make weight loss a bit trickier, even if you're already active. The 16/8 intermittent fasting schedule can be a great way to mix things up, and a lot of people find it helps with losing those stubborn pounds, feeling more energized, and even improving focus. Since you're already doing weights and HIIT, it could fit well into your routine. Just make sure you’re still fueling your workouts properly, especially after fasting.

In my experience, the positives outweigh the negatives, but it does depend on how you approach it. If you’re mindful of what you eat during your 8-hour window—like prioritizing whole foods, proteins, and plenty of veggies—you shouldn’t run into nutrient deficiencies. As for concerns about "starvation mode," most people who stick to 16/8 don’t really experience that, especially if they're eating enough during their eating window.

It might take a couple of weeks for your body to adjust, and you might experience some hunger pangs in the beginning, but those usually subside. And yes, you'll find mixed opinions everywhere—some people thrive on it, while others might not feel the benefits as strongly. I say give it a go, see how you feel, and listen to your body. It’s always a bit of trial and error with these things!

I have been doing intermittent fasting in the last 6 weeks and have lost 17 lbs. already. The only exercise that I'm doing is walking and biking.

Would love to hear how it goes if you decide to try it. 😊

Re: Intermittent fasting - any experiences

Intermittent fasting has helped me significantly with weight loss. I follow the 16:8 fasting cycle, which reduces my calorie intake without restricting what I eat. During the fasting periods, my body taps into stored fat for energy, promoting fat loss. I also maintain a proper workout routine and avoid high-calorie foods.

Re: Intermittent fasting - any experiences

Certain individuals might encounter peevishness and other temperament unsettling influences when they practice discontinuous fasting because of low glucose. Low glucose, or hypoglycemia, can happen during times of calorie limitation or over times of fasting.

Re: Intermittent fasting - any experiences

Intermittent fasting (IF), especially the 16/8 schedule, can have a range of benefits and challenges, and experiences can vary quite a bit from person to person. The 16/8 method typically involves fasting for 16 hours (including sleep) and eating all meals within an 8-hour window. Many people use this approach for weight management, but it can offer other potential benefits like improved metabolic health and better digestion.
