Dry itchy skin around lips - getting worse

Hello all - I have had this in the Adult Eczema thread for a week, with no responses, so I thought I would try it in this one. Apologies for double posting!

I wonder if anyone has any advice for me. I have suffered with eczema most of my life, in adulthood confined mostly to my hands and legs, which is well controlled with emollients and the occasional use of steroid cream. I am 58. For the last couple of years, I have periodically had a rashy eruption on the outer edge of my lips, but with moisturising it has eventually subsided. This time it has lasted about a month and seems to be getting worse, not better. I don't wear make-up and use only organic natural skincare and lip balms. I am reluctant to put any kind of cortisone on my face, as I have read that it can actually cause perioral dermatitis. I do not believe the current dry rash is this condition. I have tried so many different emollients and creams over the last couple of weeks that maybe one of them is now the culprit! Would love to hear from anyone who has experienced something similar. Thanks in advance. Best wishes from Annie.

Re: Dry itchy skin around lips - getting worse

Hi Annie,

One thing you said about using only natural skin care and lip balms struck me. I'm really careful about my skin care and lip balms, because a lot of them contain allergens and irritants, like nuts oils and peppermint respectively. Perhaps using something very innocuous like a vitamin E oil (assuming you're not allergic to soy or whatever the oil is derived from) or grapeseed oil (also assuming you're not allergic) for a few weeks will help you determine whether or not you're reacting to something in the lip balms. Even if you haven't been diagnosed with allergies previously, they can have late onset. And again, it may be caused by an irritant like peppermint oil. I love the smell, but I avoid using it on my skin.

As for cortisone, speak to your doctor about your concerns. There are a few non-cortisone creams which may be of use if you are strongly opposed to cortisone.

Re: Dry itchy skin around lips - getting worse

Hi! I know it is hard to find something that helps on the internet. I am also suffering from atopic eczema from my early childhood, so I was just searching and searching and searching..

Finally, I found blog that is written by one guy that cured from atopic eczema in adult age. There are no scams, no commercials, just real advices that work and I really find
these information useful.

So if you are suffering from atopic eczema, just read some articles, or contact him for advice! He´s really good at it! I think, better than doctors are :P

Good luck! :)
