Does diabetes affects the eyes ?
My mom is diabetic for the past ten years. Since her eyes were irritating too much, she wanted to ensure whether diabetes has affected her eyesight. So I booked an appointment with an eye care centre nearby. When I took her there, the doctor examined her eyes thoroughly.Once the check-up got over, he said that her eyesight is ok and is not affected by diabetics. He also told us she has an infection in her eyes, and the irritation is due to it. He prescribed some ointments and eye drops to apply. My mom used it for a week, and she was able to see the difference. Can anyone plz tell me how you feel when your eyes get affected with diabetes? Do share your views here

Re: Does diabetes affects the eyes ?
Diabetes has a number of eye effects. The principal one is to weaken retinal blood vessels leading to micro aneurysmal dilation, focal hemorrhages, major blood leaks, ischemia, and neovascular growth. All of these can affect the vision unless treated. If the damage breaks through the inner layer of the retina it can cause fibrotic changes and vitreous strands which can cause retinal detachment and major changes in the vision. These are why diabetics should have eye exams by their ophthalmologist yearly because in the early stages most of these changes are treatable but if allowed untreated, permanent visual changes can result.

Re: Does diabetes affects the eyes ?
Happy to know that your Mom's eyes are not affected by diabetes. Diabetes patients should be more careful about their eyes as there is a great chance of affecting the eyesight.
My father used to experience blurred vision in his early fifties and was diagnosed with diabetes later. After that, we realized that this blurred vision is because of diabetes. As he was in the early stages of diabetes, his doctor suggested laser surgery to clear the vision problem. After the surgery, his vision was perfect, and he is very much careful about diabetes. If diabetes is not controlled, then there are chances for it to affect the vision again.

Re: Does diabetes affects the eyes ?
I had heard that diabetes can affect eyesight: even lead to blindness. This is why it is so important to get tested for diabetes and take steps to prevent it. Because diabetes can be "cured" [for lack of a better word]. It is something a medical professional can advise on. Certainly if anyone is worried they've got diabetes, then it is crucial to see their doctor and have a blood test.
I know blood tests seem scary to some people BUT it is vital to go through with them. I write this because I used to fear having them, but now just have them done. If you are afraid, then the nurse will make it quick & painless.
Anyhow, do see your doctor if you're worried you've got diabetes. Not just if your eyesight is affected, but also if you experience other health problems.

Diabetes is deadly serious. If someone thinks they've got it, it is very important they see their doctor. Health problems that arise from diabetes are very serious. I'd advise anyone see their doctor sooner rather than later.
