Answering CBD FAQs with Bud & Tender

Sales of CBD products are reaching record heights. Back in May 2021, the Centre for Medical Cannabis estimated that the industry is set to make around £690m in yearly sales.

As people’s interest in CBD oils, balms and lotions continues to grow, more and more products are popping up on the market. To make sure that you are fully equipped to make the right decisions when you invest in CBD, we asked Bud & Tender to answer some questions.

Bud & Tender is a UK-based, award-winning CBD supplement company that is dedicated to producing sustainable, high-quality, natural products. Here, Director of the brand Mark Turner shares his expert knowledge on all you need to know about CBD…

When was CBD first used for medicinal purposes?

The Pharmacopoeia of Shen Nung, 2700 B.C is the earliest written account of cannabis being used for medicinal purposes. Shen Nung is regarded as the father of Chinese medicine, but he wasn’t the only person to use cannabis for its medicinal properties. The Assyrians, Greeks, Romans and Indian Hindus all have texts discussing the uses of cannabis for health problems such as depression, pain, inflammation and arthritis.

Why do you think interest in CBD has grown in recent years?

Interest has grown because it works, and it makes a huge difference to people’s lives.  However, we have to thank THC for playing a huge role in CBD’s popularity. THC is hard to access in the UK because you need a medical prescription, whereas CBD can be easily purchased online or over the counter. Therefore, we are seeing CBD boom in popularity.

When would should people start supplementing with CBD?

To increase your human cannabinoid production levels and balance your endocannabinoid tone, you should prioritise exercising daily, eating a good balanced diet and making sure you get adequate rest, especially high-quality sleep. If you feel you can’t completely balance your endocannabinoid tone this way, then you can look into supplementing with plant cannabinoids such as CBD.

Before you purchase a CBD supplement make sure you check to see if a certificate of analysis is available. This will ensure the product is clean, safe and legal to consume.

How are pain and the endocannabinoid system linked?

When it comes to pain and the body’s endocannabinoid system, we see that human cannabinoids are produced in response to tissue injury, excessive nociceptive signalling and pain. They can suppress inflammation and change sensitization.

If your body’s endocannabinoid system is unable produce enough human cannabinoids when needed, your health can begin to suffer and this is where plant cannabinoids shine. They are the perfect supplement for your body’s endocannabinoid system which in turn will help with not just pain, but pleasure, appetite, mood, memory, fertility and other biological functions too.

CBD is very weak and doesn’t actually bind with cannabinoid receptors. Why does it reduce symptoms of pain?

We believe CBD can regulate the perception of pain by affecting the activity of other receptors in our body’s. CBD can bind to non-cannabinoid receptors and increase levels of AEA, but then restricts AEA from binding to CB1 receptors. So, the conclusion is that plant cannabinoids like CBD and the human cannabinoid AEA must be acting on other receptors to produce pain relief.  We know AEA can bind with the TRPV1 receptor to initiate desensitisation and it also activates GPR55 and PPARs receptors.

Why do you offer different concentrates of Bud and Tender CBD?

At Bud & Tender we have four different strengths of CBD oil, ranging from a 5% CBD oil to a 40% CBD oil

We have the different strengths available because everyone requires different amounts of our CBD oil to balance their endocannabinoid system. For example, we have customers that take our 20% CBD oil for arthritic pain. A single serving will offer them 50mg of CBD, 2mg of CBG, 1.6mg CBC, 1.4mg of CBDV and 0.2mg CBT. All these cannabinoids work together to enhance the effectiveness of our oil, this is known as the ‘entourage effect’. Everyone is different and different people require different strengths, that is the reason for the strength options.

Why is CBD so good for our mental  health  and sleep?

Your mental health and sleep quality are controlled by lots of different chemicals in the body and your endocannabinoid system regulates the release of these chemicals! If your endocannabinoid system is in balance and functioning correctly, you will ensure it is regulating your brains chemical levels correctly. Which will balance your mental health and sleep.

Are there different types of CBD?

Yes, there are different types of CBD extract. It’s the extract that then goes into a variety of products. Two of these are:

Whole-plant (crude)

Whole-plant (crude) CBD oil, uses an unrefined CBD extract. It will contain the key compounds from the cannabis flower such as cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids, plus undesirable compounds such as fats, lipids, waxes and chlorophyll.

The more undesirable compounds present in an extract, the lower the quality of the CBD oil. Whole-plant CBD oil will contain controlled cannabinoids such as THC, CBN or THCV, making it a Schedule 1 drug under the MDR 2001 and illegal without a medical prescription.

No-spectrum CBD oil

No-spectrum CBD oil uses a CBD isolate extract. There is only CBD present, the isolated extract is usually 99% pure CBD. It does not contain controlled cannabinoids like THC, CBN or THCV. It is not classed as a schedule 1 drug and may be sold as a food supplement.

In addition to the different types of naturally produced CBD extracts, we are seeing synthetic CBD products come on to the market. There is currently no legislation that requires companies to state if their CBD is synthetic or natural. At Bud & Tender we’re all about the plant and we love naturally derived CBD!

What would you say to someone who is interested in supplementing with CBD?

You will need to experiment with different doses and frequency to establish what works best for you and your body. Remember, everyone’s endocannabinoid system is different so it will take a little trial and error to dial in your required amount.
